Pediatric Dentist Q & A

Torrance Dental Center

When should my child first visit the dentist?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children visit the dentist by their first birthday. Doing so allows your dentist to check for cavities and ensure you’re providing proper dental care.

Small children develop different forms of tooth decay that progress more quickly than the decay in adult teeth. As a measure of preventive care, to avoid tooth loss or gum disease, your pediatric dentist addresses cavities and other dental abnormalities.

Early dental care for children provides your dentist with an opportunity to monitor the development of their teeth for early intervention of orthodontic issues.

What type of dental treatments are available for children?

If the dentist detects signs of cavities, he may recommend several treatments to treat tooth decay and prevent further dental problems:

  • Topical fluoride hardens tooth enamel
  • Dental sealants prevent cavities and fill in chewing-surface grooves where bacteria grows
  • Bonding repairs minor chips and fractures in front teeth
  • Root canals prevent premature loss of baby teeth, an abnormal bite, and orthodontic treatment

Your child’s dentist schedules routine visits to monitor their oral health and the growth of baby teeth. As permanent teeth come in, your dentist continues to provide dental care guidance and routine exams to identify cavities, oral diseases, and abnormal bites.

How do I care for my baby’s teeth?

You should provide care for your baby’s teeth as soon as they erupt from the gums, usually between the ages of six and nine months. To clean your infant’s teeth, use a damp piece of gauze or washcloth to rub the gums and teeth after each bottle or feeding.

By the age of two, establish a daily brushing routine by using a soft-bristled toothbrush and small dab of toothpaste. Continue helping your child to brush their teeth until they can to do it themselves.
